High-Tech Greenhouse for Hydroponic Lettuce Production in Japan

MGS technology, advanced climate control, and structural engineering for efficient leafy green production

J. Huete Greenhouses has successfully led the design, construction, and commissioning of a one-hectare multi-span greenhouse in Japan, specifically developed for hydroponic lettuce production using an MGS (Mobile Gutter System) with NFT gutters. This project clearly demonstrates how the integration of structural engineering, advanced automation, and mobile hydroponic systems enables high levels of efficiency, precision, and production stability in leafy green crops.

From the earliest design phase, the greenhouse was conceived as a fully integrated solution, carefully adapted to both local climatic conditions and strict Japanese technical regulations, with a clear objective: to deliver a stable, highly controlled growing environment capable of maximizing crop performance year-round.

A robust structure designed to support a mobile hydroponic system

The greenhouse features a reinforced multi-span structure, built with galvanized steel columns, foundation plates, and additional beams that ensure outstanding stability and long-term durability. This structural design is particularly critical for installations incorporating MGS technology, where precise alignment, dynamic loads, and structural continuity are essential for the smooth operation of mobile NFT gutters.

The high-resistance gutters with anti-condensation technology provide efficient drainage while also acting as longitudinal structural reinforcements. This dual structural and functional role enhances the overall rigidity of the greenhouse and ensures reliable performance of the mobile hydroponic system, even under demanding climatic conditions.

Intelligent ventilation for a uniform microclimate

Hydroponic lettuce production using MGS requires precise control of temperature and humidity to achieve uniform growth. For this reason, the greenhouse incorporates a high-performance automated ventilation system, combining motorized butterfly-type roof vents with two-stage perimeter ventilation.

This system automatically responds to real-time environmental data collected by advanced sensors, maintaining optimal climate conditions throughout the greenhouse. In addition, air recirculation fans prevent air stratification and ensure homogeneous distribution of temperature and humidity across all growing lines—an essential factor in high-density mobile NFT systems.

Energy efficiency and climate stability

The project integrates double horizontal energy-saving screens, manufactured from materials highly resistant to oxidation and UV radiation. These screens reduce energy consumption, minimize day–night temperature fluctuations, and create a more stable microclimate, supporting balanced plant development throughout the entire crop cycle.

The installation is complemented by a rainwater collection system using PVC piping, contributing to efficient water management and reinforcing the project’s sustainable approach.

Full automation and precise control of the MGS system

The greenhouse is equipped with an advanced climate control system, including weather stations and next-generation sensors that monitor wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity, and other critical environmental parameters. All data is integrated into a management software platform that automates the operation of ventilation, screens, and other systems, while allowing operators to monitor and fine-tune greenhouse performance in real time.

In parallel, J. Huete Greenhouses designed and implemented an optimized electrical system, featuring individual protection panels for each automated component—including the MGS system, ventilation, and screens—ensuring maximum safety, reliability, and operational precision.

A benchmark for hydroponic lettuce production in Asia

Now fully operational, this project strengthens J. Huete Greenhouses’ position as a technology partner specialized in greenhouses for lettuce and leafy green crops, capable of seamlessly integrating MGS, NFT systems, and advanced automation into a single turnkey solution.

The successful commissioning of this greenhouse in Japan marks a significant step forward in the adoption of mobile hydroponic technologies in Asia and reflects J. Huete Greenhouses’ ongoing commitment to developing efficient, durable, and future-ready agricultural facilities.
